First PlaceThe Collegiate Staff: Grand Rapids Community College
Police chief, sheriff, officers kneel beside impassioned protestors in Grand Rapids "This is really good job covering the protest. I like the different angles, closeups of both police and protestors. Good composition used. You captured a few good shots capturing emotions of people as well. Going forward work on creativity with compositions, depth of field, exposure etc. nice job." |
Second PlaceTorrence Williams: Washtenaw Community College
Photos by Torrence Williams "Pretty Good job here. You got some good shots of both sides of the event as far as spectators and politicans/speakers. As a whole I think you need a few closeups. Maybe closer shots of the speakers, butI understand as a student you don't have the proper gear to capture that.Composition-wise you have nice symetry however not everything has to be dead center in the middle." |
Third PlaceKatherine Warden: Henry Ford College
2020: The Crustiest Year "This is a good story about dealing with being quarantined. Many of us found hobbies like baking to do. You have some good shots but some fall short in the details. I like the shot of the arrangement of the ingredients. The beer bread wasn't framed right. The cake is hitting the bottom and the plate is cropped in an odd way. Also the background isn't consistent. Take that tray out and center it on a wooden table it would be a winner. The bread with the beer is composed nicely. All I would say is pay attention to where the light is and position items next time to take advantage of the light. Keep an eye on your backgrounds. A simple white card can be used to reflect light back in to control shadows. Instagram is full of great food shots taken in natural lighting." |
Honorable Mentions
Courtney Ockert: Northwestern Michigan College
Local Seasonal Cheer
"A good collection of images. As a group they lack context… the bigger picture where you are at. As outsider looking in I don't know where you are visually. Sometimes getting someone to pose can add interest as well. You have a fairly good sense of composition developing. Keep at it. I think you cropped the bunny too tight though."
